Posted The Darkness is Gathering…

The observant among you will have noticed that there’s a new Inspector McLean book coming out on January 25th. To mark the launch of The Gathering Dark – book eight in the series – I will be doing a short signing and talking tour. Dates confirmed are as follows:

Wednesday January 24th – Waterstones West End, Princes Street, Edinburgh. 6.30pm. In conversation with Russel D McLean

Thursday January 25th – Elgin Library, Cooper Park, Elgin, IV30 1HS. 7.00pm

Friday February 9th – Waterstones Dunfermline. 7.00pm. In conversation with Neil Broadfoot

All events in association with those lovely people at Waterstones. As ever, the day job makes getting away for more distant events difficult, but hopefully I will be adding more to the list. I will certainly be at Harrogate in July and Stirling in September for Bloody Scotland.

Posted It’s all happening now!

I’m all too aware that I’ve been neglecting this place of late. There never seems to be enough time in the day to do everything, and often it’s the website that gets overlooked. And so it is, the last post here was back in February. Sorry about that, but there are some interesting things coming soon, so I will try harder to update this page more regularly.

In the meantime, I’m going to be doing a few events over the next month or so. If you fancy coming along to any of them to hear me wittering on about books, cows and other interesting stuff, here are the details:

Saturday October 28th – Macmillan Cancer Fundraiser. 2.30pm at the Provost Wind Function Suite, Cupar. Tickets £8 to include wine and nibbles. I’ll be reading from my latest book and talking about my path to publication. I’ll be signing books and there will be books available to buy. All proceeds go to Macmillan Cancer Support. Contact Jill Scott – j.scott154@btinternet.com or Maggie Robb – margaretrobb818@btinternet.com for more details, or just turn up on the day!

Friday 3rd-Sunday 5th November – Grantown on Spey Book Festival

Book Week Scotland is the last week of November, and I’m signed up for library talks across the country.

Monday 27th November – Paisley Central Library – 7pm

Wednesday 29th November – Reid Hall, Forfar – 7pm

Thursday 30th November – Auchterarder Branch Library – 7pm

January next year sees the publication of book eight in the Inspector McLean series, The Gathering Dark. There will be events around publication day, including a launch at Waterstones West End, Edinburgh and talks at Elgin, Newton Mearns and Dunfermline. More details once we’ve nailed them down.

Posted A few places you can find me…

So, the publicity for the new book is beginning to fall into place. There’s a launch event on publication day, February 23rd. Half six at Waterstones West End in Edinburgh. Tickets are free and available in store. I’ll be chatting with Russel D McLean about things and stuff.

I’ll also be at Toppings in St Andrews on March 3rd – more details here.

March the 7th will be busy. I’m visiting reading groups at Waterstones Dundee and Perth, then an evening event at Waterstones Kirkcaldy – kicking off at 7pm, not 07:00 hours as it says here!

There will be more dates, more signings and appearances to announce soon. Details have to be pinned down first though, tricky little things that they are. Keep an eye on this page, Twitter and Facebook for updates.

Posted Written in Bones Launch! Waterstones West End, Edinburgh

The clock is ticking down now, and we’ll soon be launching the seventh (eek!) book in the Detective Inspector McLean series. Written in Bones sees Tony McLean investigating perhaps the most unusual case of his career, when the body of a man is found high up in the bare winter branches of a tree on Edinburgh’s Meadows.

To celebrate the publication of the book, I will be appearing at Waterstones West End, Edinburgh – that’s 128 Princes Street if you’re unsure. I’ll be in conversation with Russel D McLean. Entry is free, and it all kicks off at half six in the evening.

Hopefully this time no one will try to set fire to the castle, like they did when we launched The Book of Souls…

There will be more events in the near future. Keep an eye out on this page for details, or follow my twitter and facebook feeds.

Posted More places you will find me.

Rubbish as I am at updating these pages, I’ve been very remiss of late in telling you all where I will be and when. It’s quite possible that nobody really cares, of course. But just in case you do, here’s my schedule for the end of 2016 – the year that keeps on giving.

Wednesday November 9th – Noir at the Bar Edinburgh – 7pm until late at the Wash Bar, 11-13 North Bank Street, Edinburgh. Join me, Russel McLean (no relation), Neil Broadfoot, Shelley Day, Jackie McLean (also no relation), Mark Leggatt, Vic Watson, Tana Collins and Lucy Cameron as we read extracts from our books, answer questions and drink prodigious amounts of booze. Given what’s happening across the water, I think we’re all going to need it.

Thursday 17th-Sunday 20th November – Iceland Noir, Nordic House, Reykjavik. Details here.

Tuesday 22nd November – Book Week Scotland – Mitchell Library, Glasgow – 6.30pm – I’ll be joining Clare Mackintosh and Adam Hamdy to talk about our latest books and stuff. Tickets and details here.

Wednesday 23rd November – Book Week Scotland – Mayfield Library, Edinburgh – 7.00pm – just me this time, reading, talking, answering questions. This one’s free, but information here.

Thursday 24th November – Book Week Scotland – Largs Library, North Ayrshire – 7.00pm – more of me, but on the other side of the country. Here’s the skinny.

Friday 25th November – Book Week Scotland – Dunbar Library, East Lothian – 7.00pm – because it’s as far away from Largs as it’s possible to go. Details on this link.

Incidentally, Book Week Scotland isn’t just about me; there are hundreds of events all over the country, supported by the Scottish Book Trust and promoting libraries and reading. Check out the website, see if there’s something happening near you, and most important of all USE YOUR LIBRARY!!!

Wednesday 30th November – Piershill Library, Edinburgh – 6.30pm – for those of you who missed me at Mayfield. Details to follow.

Thursday 8th December – Noir at the Bar, Dundee. Details to be announced, but this will be my last gig before Written in Bones comes out in February 2017

Posted Where I’m at…

It’s been a while since I’ve updated this place, I know. And for that I’m sorry. Life is always busy and there’s only so much my brain can hold on to before important stuff starts to leak out.

Anyway. We’re into the second half of the year now (blimey!). I’ve delivered both Benfro book five – The Obsidian Throne – and McLean book seven – Oh I wish I could find a title my publishers and I both like – so it’s time to hit the campaign trail, so to speak. Here’s a list of places I will be in the upcoming months. If you’re in the neighbourhood for any of them, do come along and say hi. I’m not scary, really. Just a bit scatterbrained.

Click on an event for more details:

There are one or two other events where I might possibly put in an appearance, subject to farming and writing schedules. Keep checking back for updates.

Posted The Damage Done – Launch Tour

I have a new book out on February 25th, in case you hadn’t noticed. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I can’t do anything the week of publication, but I’ve put together a few events in March. Catch me at any of these if you’d like to hear more about the book.

There will be more events over the course of the year, especially around the paperback publication in July. Keep coming back for updates. Who knows? I may even remember to post them.

Posted Prayer for the Dead

UPDATE — NOW WITH NEW EVENTS!

Yes, it’s almost time for the next book in the Inspector McLean series. Prayer for the Dead is published on February 12th here in the UK, and it’s the first time I’m going to be in hardback.

I’ll be doing a mini-tour to promote the book, and signing stock in as many bookshops as I can find. Here’s a provisional timetable, though I would recommend checking the links just in case times/venues have to change.

In addition to all these events, I will be signing stock at WHSmith in each of these towns, so check with your local shop if you’re after a signed copy.

I am frequently asked about events south of the border. While I’d love to come to every town and meet all my readers, there simply isn’t enough time to do that, run the farm and write the next book. I will be going to a few literary festivals this year – check back for updates – and I do try to visit book shops whenever I’m travelling. Otherwise, speak to your local bookshop – if there’s enough demand I’ll come pay you a visit!

Forbidden Planet Signing – London – November 18th Forbidden Planet, London

I’ve been reading comics since I was in short trousers, and first discovered the delights of Forbidden Planet in the early 1980s, when it was in Denmark Street, just off the Charing Cross Road in London. So it is with enormous pleasure and not a small amount of smugness that I can announce I will be signing copies of The Rose Cord at Forbidden Planet’s new London Megastore on Shaftesbury Avenue in November. If you’re in the area, do come along.

Where: Forbidden Planet, 179 Shaftesbury Avenue, London WC2H 8JR

When: Tuesday November 18th 2014, 6-7pm

Posted USA!

So tomorrow I will be boarding a plane at that Edinburgh Airport, heading for Heathrow and then on to Los Angeles. I have a short, LA-centric book schedule, culminating in a panel appearance at this year’s Bouchercon in Long Beach. Since it all starts very soon, I probably should have let the world know a bit earlier. Things like farming, writing and building a house rather tend to get in the way though.

This is my US schedule, anyway. If you’re interested. If not, then click here for a picture of a cow.

Tuesday November 11th – The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson

I’m sure this will make it to YouTube or somewhere for those of us who don’t have direct access to the broadcast. To say that I am nervous would be something of an understatement.

Wednesday November 12th – Vroman’s Bookstore – Stock signing 12 noon.

I’ll be at Vroman’s 695 E. Colorado Blvd, Passadena CA91101, defacing valuable books with my name. Drop in if you want something personalised.

Update – Due to reasons, this event has been cancelled. Sorry for the inconvenience. Signed copies of my books will be available at Bouchercon.

Thursday November 13th – Anne’s Bookends – Author Talk, Reading, Q&A.- 7pm

Anne’s Bookends, 348 S Tustin St, Orange. Talking about my books, my unconventional route to publication, cows, sheep and anything else that comes to mind. If you’re lucky I’ll read my favourite piece from The Hangman’s Song.

Friday November 14th – Bouchercon panel – “Great Scot! From Scotland, with Murder” – 8.30am

The Long Beach Convention Centre, 300 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach – Promenade B.

Panel discussion about Scottish Crime fiction, with Catriona McPherson, Caro Ramsay and Craig Robertson, able chaired by Kathryn Leigh Scott. Highland Cows may be mentioned in passing. There will be a book signing immediately after the panel. I am there for the whole of Bouchercon, most likely at or near the bar, so do come up and say hello if you see me. I won’t bite.

Encounters Festival – North Lanarkshire – Tuesday October 7th 7pm Coatbridge Library, Coatbridge

I’ll be in Coatbridge, at the library, talking about Dead Men’s Bones, Inspector McLean and maybe even Benfro the dragon. Do come along if you’ve nothing better to do (which, let’s face it, you probably have).

Where: Coatbridge Library

When: 7pm, Tuesday 7th October 2014

How much: free!

More details: Call 01236 856444

Stirling Library – Book signing and stuff Stirling Central Library, Stirling

OK. I am officially useless at keeping this place up to date. I will be at Stirling Central Library tomorrow, 7pm, reading from the new book, talking gibberish and signing anything that stands still for long enough. Come along if you’re brave (or foolish) (or both).

Posted Where I’m at – Nine Worlds, Loncon3, FantasyCon and Benfro

August is here already. How did that happen? I should have known, of course. It usually comes right after July. That doesn’t make things any easier though.

I have finished the first draft of Inspector McLean book five – Ceremony – and that is a good thing. Unfortunately it’s only the first draft. I’d hoped to have had the whole thing done by now. Still, life gets in the way sometimes, and the best laid plans etc. etc.

The reason I wanted Ceremony done and dusted by now is that August sees the launch of The Ballad of Sir Benfro on the non-ebook reading world. 14th August is publication day for Dreamwalker, and I shall be gadding about the place trying to persuade people to buy it.

Where exactly will I be gadding about, you ask? (Presumably keen to see what gadding looks like.) Well, to start with I will be at Nine Worlds, the London Geekfest, starting this very Friday (8th of August for those of you who like numbers, and let’s face it, who doesn’t like numbers?) There will be early release copies of the book there, so you can buy one and then ask me to deface it for you. I’ll also be participating in a discussion about marketing, with the delightful Danie Ware of Forbidden Planet, and Tom Hunter of the Clarke Award, on Sunday at 3.15 pm in Room 30.

After Nine Worlds comes Loncon3. The con opens on August 14th, coincidentally the same day that Dreamwalker is officially published. I’ll be wandering around looking slightly lost for most of the time, so if you see me do come up and say hello. I may or may not be participating in panellage at LonCon – keep an eye out for developments on that front.

Not all that long after Loncon, we head to York for FantasyCon. It starts on Friday 5th September, but alas I won’t be there until Saturday lunchtime. You’ll most likely find me at the bar, so stay away from there if you’re sick of the sight of me already.

I’m at these events with my fantasy hat on (you should see it, it’s fantastic!) but that doesn’t mean I’m refusing to talk about Tony McLean. My mission is to kick down the barriers between genres, so come along all you crime fiction fans and let a little weird into your lives.

Posted WH Smith Perth WH Smith, Perth

A bit last minute with the information here, for which my apologies.

World Book Night – April 23rd 2014 – Aberdeen Central Library Aberdeen Central Library, Aberdeen

In celebration of all things bookish, I will be at the Aberdeen Central Library on World Book Night. There will be fun. There will be games. There will most likely be me rambling on about writing and cows.

Where: Musselburgh Library, 10 Bridge Street, Musselburgh EH21 6AG

Tickets are free, but contact the library to let them know you’re coming or there won’t be enough biscuits.

Library Event – Kemnay Library – March 11th 2014 Kemnay Library, Kemnay

Another day, another talk in a library. This time it’s Kemnay’s turn – my first foray north in a while. I’ll be talking about my books, writing, farming, the weather, world politics, pretty much anything, really. There’ll be a chance to ask me probing questions, which I will answer evasively. I might sign stuff, too.

Where: Kemnay Library, Kemnay, Aberdeenshire

When: 7.30 PM

More details here

Signings – Saturday March 8 2014

In a triumph of hope over experience, I shall be signing books at Waterstones Kirkcaldy from half twelve until half one on Saturday March 8th. After that, I will be signing books in Waterstones Cameron Toll, Edinburgh, from two until four.

Those with an appreciation of Scottish geography and Edinburgh traffic will understand that I may be a wee bit late at Cameron Toll.

More details can be found here.

Library Talk – Kilmarknock – March 6th 2014 Dick Institute, Kilmarnock

I’ll be at the Dick Institute (stop sniggering!) Library in Kilmarnock, on Thursday March 6th 2014, from about half seven until half nine. There’ll be some blether, some reading from the new book, some questions to which I will attempt sensible answers, and the opportunity to buy books. I will also sign these, or anything else you bring along (as long as it’s not a cheque from that cheque book I lost a few months back).

No linky for further details, but you can contact Ayrshire Libraries for more information if date, time and venue are not enough.

Book Launch for The Hangman’s Song – Waterstones Newton Mearns – March 4th 2014 Waterstones, The Avenue Shopping Centre, Newton Mearns

Book Signing – Waterstones Perth – Saturday 1st March 2014 Waterstones, Perth

30th November 2013 – Book Week Scotland – Fife Readers’ Day – Rothes Hall Glenrothes Rothes Hall, Glenrothes

29th November 2013 – Book Week Scotland – Steps Theatre Dundee Steps Theatre, Dundee

Posted Events, dear boy

So, somewhere down the line I had a book launch, and Natural Causes was released into the wild as a paperback. Not only that, those lovely people Richard Madely and Judy Finnegan decided that it would be quite nice to have the book as one of their book club Summer Reads.

Make with the clicky to go to the website and find out more about it.

The Book of Souls is due out in print on July 4th, and I’m having a launch event for that in Waterstones West End in Edinburgh. This is a ticketed event, so if you feel the urge to come along, get in touch with the store first to avoid the disappointment of only being able to see me through nose-smeared window glass.

Between now and then I’m doing a few signings. If I can crack the technology, I’ll get an events page up and running with proper links and stuff. Meantime confirmed events as follows:

25th May – 12:30 – Waterstones Kirckaldy – signing

2nd June – 11:00am – CrimeFest Bristol – I’m on a panel discussing how far we would go for our art. I’m there for the duration.

8th June – 12-2 – Waterstones St Andrews – signing

12 June – 7pm – Waterstones Argyll Street, Glasgow – me talking bollocks for a while, possibly reading something, fielding questions as evasively as I can manage, scribbling in books.

6th July – 12-2 – Waterstones Perth – signing

6th July – 7pm Perth Library – in conversation with Allan Guthrie – This one still to be confirmed.

11th July – 6pm – Waterstones West End Edinburgh – cross-examined by Russel D McLean, some more avoiding the question and some book-defacing.

I’ll also be at the Theakstons Old Peculiar Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate from 18th to 21st July, just as a punter, but if you want something signed and are there, I won’t bite. Well, not unless you ask me to.

Sometime in the next couple of months I’m going to be going around a lot of WH Smiths in Scotland signing stock, too. If I have dates and times I’ll post them here.
